We are now down to the last two weeks before the big move and we sure could use your help. This week we are finishing sanding and scraping shelf ends so they can be painted in time to receive all the books, videos, audios, and magazines. Next week we would like to move everything but the books so help with sorting, packing, carrying, moving would be greatly appreciated. We could also use painters who can help touch up the spots on the shelving that has been scratched during its many trips to and from the prison and the library. We could also use paint brushes and cleaning supplies. If you like cleaning, we can keep you busy up to the opening – it's amazing how many footprints are tracked in and how much dust accumulates on furniture and fixtures. The Library Board will be holding a final sale of leftover materials, chalk boards, doors, etc. from the “old middle school” building at the new parking lot on Elm St. in front of the North entrance to the new facility on Friday June 5 from 10:00 – 3:00.
The last day the Library will be open for “business” is Saturday June 13; don't forget to bring a box and come in any time before then to check out a box of books for up to six weeks. Beginning on Monday June 15, we will be packing and moving books and we will need as many volunteers as possible to help with this effort. We hope to have all the materials moved by Wednesday so we can unpack on Thursday and Friday. There is a sign up sheet in the Library or feel free to call (738-2774) and ask to have your name put on the list of helpers. On Saturday June 20, during the Black Diamond festivities, the Friends of the Library will hold their annual book sale at the current facility on Main St . Kidz Klub will be having goodies for sale to help fundraise for their projects during the year.
The Library Board and staff have been working hard to plan a great two day Grand Opening event for the community. Please watch for notices of events taking place on Friday June 26, ribbon cutting and guest speakers in the morning and storytelling and crafts for children all afternoon. On Saturday there will be programs during the day for adults and live music until 4:00 PM. Don't forget that Summer Reading Programs for children and teens will begin at the current facility and resume as soon as we are moved into the new library.
It is even beginning to look like we may need help mowing the lawn; I had almost given up hope of seeing the grass grow after all the construction but it is turning green although the weeds seem to be taking over; in fact they are even growing between the rocks above the weed barrier – pretty tough “volunteers” in Walsenburg!
