  1. Where is the camera located?
  2. The camera is located on a hill that overlooks the town of Walsenburg, Colorado. It is pointed to the West/SouthWest, or about 250° on the compass. It is located on private property attached to a private residence.
  3. Who owns the camera?
  4. The camera is privately owned.
  5. How long has the camera been on-line?
  6. The camera was installed in June of 2003 and made available to the library in March of 2005.
  7. Can I access the camera directly from my computer?
  8. No. The camera is actually part of a private network with no access to the Internet. Special scripts are used to provide the image to the library web server.
  9. Can I use the images from the camera on my web page?
  10. Yes. You can link directly to the script that generates the image. Please send email to webcam@spld.org to let the owner know about it and get assistance if you need it.
  11. How often is the camera image updated?
  12. The image is updated about 2-3 times per minute, 24 hours a day. You can view the latest image from the camera on the webcam page by clicking the refresh button on your web browser.
  13. Is the camera only available during the summer?
  14. No. The camera is mounted in an all-weather enclosure to protect it from the elements and is active 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. We have had periodic outages due to hardware and network problems, but we do try and minimize down-time.
  15. What type of camera is it?
  16. It is an AXIS 2110 Network Camera.
  17. I thought AXIS cameras provided full motion video. Can I access full-motion, real-time video from the library webcam?
  18. No. The camera is actually managed from Denver, Colorado and configured for still frame captures only. Besides, full-motion, real-time video from that camera is pretty boring and would eat A LOT of bandwidth. However, you can access timelapse movies that we have placed at the bottom of the webcam page. Generally if something interesting has happened, we'll create a timelapse movie of that day and place it in the archive.
  19. How do you create the timelapse movies?
  20. The computer that controls the camera archives every frame capture on it's hard drive. We then use a Perl script to weed out the early morning and late night frames (because it's pretty boring and makes the file about twice as large as it needs to be), and complie the remaining frames into an MPEG movie using the ffmpeg package.
  21. Can I request a timelapse of a particular date?
  22. Yes. However, due to a hardware failure, we've lost all of the capture archives prior to September 6th of 2005. But if you have a request for a date after that, send email to webcam@spld.org and we'll be happy to try and accommodate your request.
  23. The image is pretty small and it's hard to make out details. Can I access a larger image?
  24. Not yet. Currently, the camera is configured to deliver 320x240 images. However, it is capable of doubling that resolution to 640x480. We're currently working on providing an option for the larger image.
